Leya Evelyn

Leya Evelyn is an abstract artist working primarily with oils and collage. Her work is characterized by colour impact created through a density of collage, underlying writing, and layers of paint. To her “these paintings explore non-verbal, intuitive means of communicating, a metaphor for the elusiveness of knowledge and experience,” implying a balance between public expression and more private, inner experiences.

In 1959 she obtained a BA with cum laude honours from Brown University in Providence, RI. Then went on to study at Yale University School of Fine Arts, in New Haven, CT from 1959 to 1960, and at Pratt Graphic Arts Center in New York, NY in 1964 and 1983. She has taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, NS and at various other institutions.

Leya’s work is in corporate and private collections worldwide, including: The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Fund for the City of New York, Acadia University Art Gallery, Royal Bank (Toronto, ON), British Airways (Montreal, QC), Toyota Canada, Ltd. (Halifax, NS), RCA Corp. (New York, NY), Eveready Batteries (St. Louis, MO), to name a few. Leya has also been the recipient of numerous awards, Nova Scotia Art Council and Canada Council grants. She regularly exhibits throughout North America and Europe.
