Joanne Solway is a sculptor and carver working in stone, wood and clay. Her detailed representational pieces mostly focus on wildlife because "They are more mysterious, more fleeting, less accessible." Her inspiration is capturing the intangible spirit of her subject in a medium that is hard and unyielding; the lifelike results speak to her insight and talent. Joanne enjoyed art since an early age and dabbled in various media throughout the years until the 1980's when she discovered wood carving. She began with highly realistic bird carvings, which evolved into a looser, more impressionistic style. She is largely self taught. Joanne has been the recipient of numerous wildlife art awards. Prominent commissions include Ducks Unlimited and the Legislative Assembly of the North West Territories. Her work is in private collections in the United States, Europe and Canada.
