Eliza Schurman is a Nova Scotian artist working in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolour, ceramic, and mixed media. For Eliza, art is the visual expression of her love for nature and the environment. Her art began as realistic landscapes and portraiture, and has evolved to abstracted/abstract images. It is an evolution which Eliza attributes to shamanic journeying and meditation: “Abstract art helps me visualize feelings and concepts that are without form.” Her work is characterized by dynamic brushstrokes and vivid colours, which emanate strong energy and draws the viewer in. Encouraged by her teachers and family, she began private art lessons at the age of twelve. At seventeen, Eliza started studying with prominent Nova Scotian painter, John Cook. Later in life, she enrolled at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating on her 50th birthday with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with honours in studio painting and ceramics. She continues to hone her skills by taking specialized workshops with accomplished artists in Canada, the United States, and South American. Bridging her career as a teacher and her passion as an artist, Eliza has taught painting in Canada, Cuba, and France. Over the past four decades Eliza has had many solo and group shows. Her paintings are in private collections in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Switzerland, South Africa, Cuba, France and England.
