Carol Smeraldo

 

Carol Smeraldo is a potter and sculptor primarily working in Raku and Porcelain. Focusing on one-of-a-kind sculptural forms, some of them referencing vessels, with an emphasis on experimental techniques inspired by metaphors and marine motifs.

Carol attended Rhode Island School Of Design, Massachusetts College of Art and NSCAD Univ. She received the first NS Cultural Life Award and the Progress Club of Canada’s Women of Excellence Award in Arts and Culture. She helped found NS Designer Crafts Council and is a past president and Chair of Standards as well as an Honourary Member and is designated as a Master Artisan. She founded and directed the Halifax Studio School of Pottery and One Off Studio Pottery and developed the school at Atlantic Pottery Supplies. Smeraldo has been a fulltime clay artist, sculptor and potter since 1971.

Her work is included in public and private collections in Canada, USA, England and Japan including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Mount St. Vincent University and New Brunswick Museum. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions, received grants and awards in Canada and the USA. Carol’s work has been featured in magazines and books including Studio Ceramics in Canada, Gail Crawford, Ceramics Monthly, 2008, Potters Council Raku Calendar 2010 and 2013 and Lark Books 500 Raku, 2011.
